The Leelanau Peninsula, Lake Michigan

24 MP (5100x5100) from 70mm Film (1994) This photo was taken four days after the other April Ice photos, using the same camera, presumably by the same Shuttle astronaut. The northern tips of the Leelanau Peninsula and Long Lake also appear at the very bottom of the April Ice: Mackinac photo, and most of that ice is now gone.

Photographs taken by weightless astronauts are often shot at unusual angles -- which apparently bothers some people -- and I've always thought that photos like this one would work well on a stairway wall. Lake Michigan's Grand and Little Traverse Bays

In addition to the two Traverse bays, the traverses to Wisconsin's Door Peninsula (bottom left corner) and to Michigan's Upper Peninsula (top left) are visible in this well-framed shot. It's October, and the autumn "color season" is clearly underway.

This photo isn't nearly as sharp as it could be. The only image that can currently be downloaded from the NASA Gateway website is this 640x480 jpeg file. I requested and received a high-resolution scan from NASA several years ago, but even that is a medium-quality jpeg file. (Most NASA film scans are top-quality tiff files.) Modern AI-based software could be used to clean it up, if NASA doesn't reply to my recent request for a truly high-resolution scan. Categories and Tags are clickable...

Lake Michigan's Grand Traverse Bay

24 MP (4032x6048) Digital The 19-mile-long Old Mission Peninsula divides most of Grand Traverse Bay into West Bay and East Bay, with Traverse City, Michigan at the base of the peninsula. In the top-left corner of the photo is a small sliver of Lake Michigan, somewhere north of Leland. The Boardman/Ottaway River runs east to west along the bottom of the frame, then turns north toward West Bay. Also visible are Acme; Elk Rapids; Suttons Bay; the Leelanau Peninsula; Lake Leelanau; Torch Lake; Elk Lake; Long Lake; Silver Lake; Power (aka Marion) Island; and many other landmarks. This photo was taken by an astronaut (probably Timothy Creamer) aboard the International Space Station in January, 2010. It looks as if the ISS was directly over the bay, but it was actually over the eastern tip of Michigan's upper peninsula (46.1° N, 84.2° W) when the photo was taken from an altitude of 208 nautical miles (240 statute).
