Thunder Bay, Isle Royale, and the Keweenaw Peninsula

40 MP (8880x4440) from 70mm Film This is a composite of two photos. The 2nd image shows just how beautifully the two aligned. The ice patterns and land match up almost perfectly, even though the photos were taken 20 seconds apart. During that time the Shuttle Endeavour flew 92 miles (148 km) -- twice the length of Isle Royale -- so the camera angles were quite different. This is probably the most dramatic of the April Ice photos. (I say "probably" because half of the three dozen Endeavour photos have never been scanned in high resolution.) NASA calls this sunglint. The Straits of Mackinac, Lakes Michigan and Huron

24 MP (5100x5100) from 70mm Film (1994) Fresh water floes still block the four mile wide passage between Lakes Michigan and Huron at the end of an ice season that saw both lakes 100% frozen over. Fresh water flows freely back and forth between the two lakes; it's not called the Mackinac River. Historically they have two names but hydrologically the two are really one big lake, 40% larger than Superior. In this photo: Sault Ste. The Leelanau Peninsula, Lake Michigan

24 MP (5100x5100) from 70mm Film (1994) This photo was taken four days after the other April Ice photos, using the same camera, presumably by the same Shuttle astronaut. The northern tips of the Leelanau Peninsula and Long Lake also appear at the very bottom of the April Ice: Mackinac photo, and most of that ice is now gone.

Photographs taken by weightless astronauts are often shot at unusual angles -- which apparently bothers some people -- and I've always thought that photos like this one would work well on a stairway wall.
