The Mississippi River

The photo at left is properly oriented north/south, but the light is coming from an unusual direction so it can fool the eye. It’s easier to understand the ridges and valleys if you turn it upside down.

Harper’s Ferry, Iowa (pop. 260) is only 160 miles east of Lake Michigan at Milwaukee, but the Mississippi is not part of the natural Great Lakes watershed.  The only connection between Lake Michigan and the Mississippi starts in Chicago; the Chicago River began flowing into Lake Michigan when the Great Lakes were formed, but engineers managed to reverse its flow in 1900, and to connect it to the Mississippi River.
