Manitoulin Island, Ontario, in Lake Huron

12 MP (4288×2848) Digital

Manitoulin Island is more than 80 miles long and over 1000 square miles; it’s the largest freshwater island in the world. The name Manitoulin comes from the Ojibwe “cave of the spirit”, referring to an underwater cave. Indigenous cultures have lived there since at least 2000 BCE. (For perspective, the Great Pyramid of Giza was built ≈2500 BCE.)

Manitoulin has over 100 lakes of its own, and it’s well-known as “so large that is has a lake that has an island that has a lake”.
