The 19-mile-long Old Mission Peninsula divides most of Grand Traverse Bay into West Bay and East Bay, with Traverse City, Michigan at the base of the peninsula. In the top-left corner of the photo is a small sliver of Lake Michigan, somewhere north of Leland. The Boardman/Ottaway River runs east to west along the bottom of the frame, then turns north toward West Bay. Also visible are Acme; Elk Rapids; Suttons Bay; the Leelanau Peninsula; Lake Leelanau; Torch Lake; Elk Lake; Long Lake; Silver Lake; Power (aka Marion) Island; and many other landmarks.
This photo was taken by an astronaut (probably Timothy Creamer) aboard the International Space Station in January, 2010. It looks as if the ISS was directly over the bay, but it was actually over the eastern tip of Michigan’s upper peninsula (46.1° N, 84.2° W) when the photo was taken from an altitude of 208 nautical miles (240 statute).
Camera: Nikon D3X, focal length 300mm.
