The St. Lawrence River at the Atlantic Ocean
12 MP (4256×2832) Digital
This is one end of the St. Lawrence Seaway. The other end is 2,300 miles away, by water: Duluth, Wisconsin, at the western end of Lake Superior. The entire Seaway has been navigable by ocean-going freighters since 1959.
This photo required a lot of restoration work. The sun is just barely above the top of the frame; the shallow angle caused two small, internal lens reflections, which have been masked. There were also a few sensor burns, which are caused when a digital camera is pointed at a very bright light for too long. Finally, while all photographers know how to clean a camera lens, not all astronauts know how to clean a window, so I masked some serious unpleasantness along the horizon.
I’m confident that when the astronaut beheld the view with their eyes, those imperfections went unnoticed.
